Biography
Having been a patient himself, Mr Allen combines a patient-centred approach with more than 15 years as a consultant.
Mr Allen graduated in medicine from the University of Dundee in 1994. He completed his higher surgical training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, followed by an Adult Reconstruction Fellowship in Ottawa, Canada, devoted to hip and knee replacement. He also holds an MSc with Distinction in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.
After 18 months as a consultant at University Hospital Hairmyres, he joined NHS Golden Jubilee National Hospital in 2010, one of the UK’s largest joint replacement centres. He has performed or directly supervised over 5,500 hip and knee replacements, and privately at Nuffield Health Glasgow Hospital he offers Mako robot-assisted surgery and day-case joint replacement for suitable patients.
He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons and a reviewer for the Bone & Joint Journal, and he helps train newly appointed consultants. His research includes the CASINO hip trial and the POLAR knee study. Having been a patient himself, he knows how much a clear explanation and a well-planned recovery matter.
